ATLANTA - State Representative Tangie Herring (D-Macon) today voiced her support for the Macon-Bibb County Commission's resolution to establish a new tiered homestead exemption for senior citizens. This initiative, championed by Mayor Lester Miller, aims to provide property tax relief to residents aged 65 and older.
"I am incredibly proud to support this common-sense legislation that directly benefits our community's elders," said Rep. Herring. "Our seniors have dedicated their lives to building this community, and it's our turn to ensure they can live out their golden years with dignity and financial security."
The proposed legislation would create the following homestead exemptions, tiered by age: a $10,000 exemption at age 65; an additional $15,000 exemption at age 75; and a full exemption from county and school property taxes at age 85.
Representative Herring looks forward to working with her colleagues in the Macon-Bibb Legislative Delegation to introduce this bill in the upcoming 2026 legislative session of the General Assembly and secure its passage.
"This is more than just a tax break; it's an investment in our neighborhoods and a commitment to keeping our families together," added Rep. Herring. "By helping our seniors stay in their homes, we are fostering stable, multi-generational communities. I urge the citizens of Macon-Bibb County to support this vital effort."
Representative Tangie Herring represents the citizens of District 145, which includes portions of Bibb and Monroe counties. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2024 and currently serves on the Code Revision, Economic Development & Tourism and Urban Affairs committees.
