On Friday, October 10th, Minister of National Defence, Liviu-Ionuț Moșteanu, had a meeting with the Ambassador of the Portuguese Republic to Romania, H.E. Paulo Cunha Alves.
The two officials discussed the effects of the war launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which continues to seriously affect stability and security in the wider Black Sea region. In this context, Minister of National Defence presented Romania's vision on the NATO initiative - Eastern Sentry, as well as the recent European initiatives - European Drone Wall and Eastern Flank Watch, intended to contribute to strengthening surveillance and defence capabilities on the Eastern Flank.
Minister Moșteanu thanked Portugal for its commitment to allied efforts to ensure security and stability in the Black Sea region, and welcomed Lisbon's contribution to the allied structures deployed on Romanian territory. The meeting also addressed the industrial scope of the defence sector, with an emphasis on opportunities to strengthen the bilateral relationship, including from the perspective of the SAFE financial instrument.
Another relevant moment of the talks was represented by the operational commitments conducted under the aegis of the European Union's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), especially on the African continent. Romania and Portugal are among the states with the largest contributions to EUTM RCA, a mission whose command is held by our country until September 2026.
At the end of the meeting, Minister of National Defence appreciated the excellent cooperation between the two states, expressing his belief that it would continue in the future.
