Overnight Lane and Bike Trail Closures Continue On I-580 For Richmond–San Rafael Bridge Open Road Tolling Project

Contra Costa County - Caltrans District 4 construction will continue overnight lane closures and construction activities on I-580 in the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge corridor, between Regatta Boulevard and the Richmond San Rafael Bridge Toll Plaza; as work progresses on the Open Road Tolling Project. To ensure the safety of both the traveling public and construction personnel, motorists are advised to anticipate intermittent overnight lane closures from Monday through Friday between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. These closures will occur in the Toll Plaza area and along I-580 as crews continue improvements to roadway median barriers, tolling systems, drainage, electrical infrastructure, and Stenmark Drive realignment.

Tuesday, Sept. 8 - Friday, Sept. 11

• Continued roadway barrier work on westbound I-580
• Toll Plaza construction activities
• Electrical and underground infrastructure work
• Drainage-related work
• Stenmark Dr. Curb and Gutter Demolition
• Bike lane-related work
• Removal of light poles in the toll plaza area
• Installation of drainage system components
• Electrical conduit and breaker installation work

Please note there will be some daytime work happening in these areas please remember to slow for the cone zones and protected barriers to keep you and our crews safe.

Thursday, Sept. 10 and Friday, Sept. 11
Overnight Bike Trail Closure from Marine St. to Stenmark Drive

Monday, Sept. 15 - Thursday, Sept. 25

• Continued roadway Median barrier work
• Begin Stenmark Drive Drainage System work including installation

Traffic Impacts
Motorists can expect intermittent lane closures on I-580, both eastbound and westbound. There will be daytime and overnight construction at the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Toll Plaza. Temporary impacts to the bike and pedestrian path may occur during barrier work. Construction vehicles will be entering and exiting the area, and reduced speeds along with shifting traffic patterns are anticipated.

Project Improvements
The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Open Road Tolling Project includes:

• Removal of existing toll booths
• Installation of new tolling infrastructure and gantries
• Updated westbound I-580 lane configuration through the toll plaza
• Roadway barrier reconstruction
• Electrical and underground conduit improvements
• Drainage system improvements
• Realignment and associated improvements at the Stenmark Drive westbound I-580 on-ramp
• New signage and other supporting roadway improvements

The project is tentatively scheduled for completion in Summer 2027.

Changeable Message Signs (CMS) will provide advance notice of scheduled closures. Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, prepare to merge and remain alert for crews and equipment.
