At the invitation of the People's Government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR), Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Nurlan Yermekbayev visited the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture of the XUAR on September 5-6, 2026.
In the city of Khorgos, the SCO Secretary General inspected the operations of the Khorgos sixth-generation border crossing point and the Khorgos International Center for Border Cooperation. There was a presentation of solutions for increasing the throughput capacity of crossing points, developing passenger and freight transportation, and expanding cross-border trade.
During the visit, Nurlan Yermekbayev also visited enterprises specializing in the production and processing of agricultural products, including dairy, as well as textile manufacturing. There was a demonstration of production capacities, export potential, and prospects for cooperation with Central Asian states.
