Strategic Firebreaks

Published on Wednesday, 16 April 2025 at 11:11:13 AM

We've had a number of recent incidents involving vandalism and damage to strategic firebreaks and related infrastructure across the Shire.
While some people may assume these firebreaks and gates are all on public land, many are actually located on private property.
This is important as:
- The gates are critical for emergency access during bushfires, allowing emergency services to reach properties quickly and safely.
- Locking gates slows down emergency response. If gates can remain unlocked and undamaged, residents can assist by opening them during a fire to help volunteer crews gain fast access.
- The constant replacement of damaged gates, signs and padlocks is not cheap.
- Accessing strategic firebreaks without permission is trespassing.
- Please report any suspicious behaviour and if you see damage, let the Shire know immediately by taking photos and emailing chatter@chittering.wa.gov.au
