RTP Grant Application - Chena Lake Recreation Area River Park Trails Reroute Phase II

Recreational Trails Program Grant Application - Public Notice

Project Title:
RTP Grant Application - Chena Lake Recreation Area River Park Trails Reroute Phase II

Organization Name:
Fairbanks North Star Borough - Parks & Recreation

Date Public Notice Posted:
September 25, 2025 Posted Online: September 30, 2025

Brief Description of Proposed Project:
The Chena River continues to erode large sections of the riverbank and adjacent trail. The eroding sections are threatening the viability of the looped system and pose a safety issue for recreationists. The more distant sections can no longer be accessed by maintenance vehicles and grooming equipment and will soon be inaccessible to trail users. This project intends to reroute eroded sections of the Chena Lake River Park trails, constructing approximately 800 feet of new trail. Two reroutes were completed through this funding program in 2022 and two remain in need. Construction will require clearing vegetation along the new corridor, placing a hardened gravel surface, and installing drainage features where necessary.
