Getting a clearer picture of smart glasses: the CNPD publishes new guidance

Smart glasses are gradually becoming part of our everyday lives. Equipped with cameras, microphones, artificial intelligence features and, in some cases, real-time analysis capabilities, they raise new questions regarding the protection of personal data and privacy.

To help members of the public, professionals and organisations understand these issues, the CNPD has published new guidance entitled 'Smart glasses: data protection and respect of privacy'.

This publication provides an accessible overview of:

• how smart glasses work and their main features;
• the potential risks to the privacy of individuals who are filmed, recorded or analysed;
• the obligations that may apply to manufacturers, suppliers and professional users;
• best practices for using these devices responsibly and in compliance with data protection rules.

As these technologies become increasingly discreet and sophisticated, it is essential to ensure a fair balance between innovation and respect for fundamental rights. The guidance emphasises, in particular, that the use of devices capable of capturing images or sound, or analysing the environment, can have significant consequences for the individuals concerned and must be carried out within a framework that complies with the GDPR and data protection principles.
