Yesterday, Rolling Stone released a stunning new report showing how private equity billionaire Steve Schwarzman used his money to curry favor with Susan Collins while Congress advanced a tax law filled with giveaways for ultra-wealthy investors like himself.
According to Rolling Stone, Schwarzman donated $2 million to Senator Collins' reelection efforts just hours before she cast a critical vote allowing the bill to advance towards passage.
While the law raises costs on working families by kicking millions off health insurance and taking away food assistance from hungry kids, Susan Collins and her GOP colleagues worked hard to make sure it also delivers massive tax breaks to those who really need it: private equity billionaires.
In response, DNC Senior Spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg issued the following statement:
"Instead of protecting Mainers from the cruel and extreme cuts in Trump's billionaire-first tax scam, Senator Collins gave Trump the green light to advance it while raking in millions from private equity mega-donors who will reap the benefits. Trump and congressional Republicans' tax law is raising costs on poor and middle-class families while giving handouts to the ultra-wealthy special interests donating to Republican campaigns. Senator Collins made clear whose side she's on: billionaire hedge fund owners, not the hardworking Mainers who are going to pay the price."
Senator Collins allowed Trump's tax scam to advance in the Senate. Now, thanks to her, private equity CEOs are celebrating while Mainers across the state suffer:
