Rep. Gabe Vasquez Announces $3.4 Million in Public Safety Investments for New Mexico Law Enforcement

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) recently announced over $3.4 million in federal funding for the New Mexico Department of Public Safety to combat gun violence, drug trafficking, substance abuse, and other violent crimes to improve public safety across New Mexico.

Specifically, Vasquez announced the following federal funding to support state, local, and Tribal law enforcement agencies in New Mexico:

• Over $1.4 million for the New Mexico Department of Public Safety through the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (Byrne SCIP) to combat gun violence, suicide, behavioral health crises, and threats of targeted violence across New Mexico.
• Over $2 million for the New Mexico Department of Public Safety through the Byrne JAG Statewide Public Safety Initiative to combat violent crime, drug trafficking, and firearm-related violence using a data-driven approach, especially in local, state, and Tribal jurisdictions with elevated crime rates.

"I will always fight to bring money home to New Mexico to make our streets safer, and this latest $3.4 million win will combat gun violence, suicide, drug trafficking, and other violent crimes in our communities through a smart, data-driven approach," said Vasquez.

Earlier this year, Vasquez secured over $9 billion in public safety funding for state and local law enforcement to keep our kids safe, combat cartels, and support crime victims through the FY26 Commerce, Justice and Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill.

Rep. Vasquez has a strong history of successfully securing funding to keep New Mexicans safer, including:

• Secured $1.06 million for the Albuquerque Police Department to deploy more public safety cameras for the "Real Time Crime Center," strengthening crime prevention, intervention, and investigation efforts across the city and in Albuquerque Public Schools.
• Secured $500,000 for Bernalillo County to invest in advanced public safety technology, including gunshot detection systems, improving law enforcement efficiency and crime response speed.
• Secured $1.4 million for the Boys and Girls Club of Las Cruces to renovate the facility and provide Las Cruces youth a safe space to learn, grow, and relax outside of school hours.
• Secured $250,000 for public safety in Carlsbad to make key infrastructure and public safety technology upgrades to the Carlsbad Police Department (CPD) Main Station.
• Secured $1 million for new streetlights and infrastructure in Las Cruces through the Lift Up Las Cruces Project, to improve pedestrian safety at night.
