TWRA Announces Official Naming of Bill Dance Lake and Herb Parsons Wildlife Refuge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) is proud to announce the official naming of Bill Dance Lake at the newly established Herb Parsons Wildlife Refuge, honoring two legendary Tennesseans whose contributions have shaped outdoor recreation and heritage across the state. The naming was previously approved by the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission and officially announced at a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on September 30.

The 177-acre reservoir in Fayette County has been named for Bill Dance, world-renowned angler, television host, and lifelong ambassador for fishing. As part of the Bill Dance Signature Lakes program, Bill Dance Lake has received significant investments in infrastructure improvements, habitat enhancement, and fisheries management. These upgrades ensure the lake offers a high-quality fishing experience for anglers of all ages and continues Tennessee's commitment to providing premier outdoor recreation opportunities.

The 474-acre property surrounding the lake, has been designated as the Herb Parsons Wildlife Refuge, named in tribute to famed sharpshooter and entertainer Herb Parsons, known as "The Greatest Exhibition Shooter of All Time." His legacy of skill, showmanship, and passion for the outdoors has inspired generations of sportsmen and women. The new refuge will serve as an important conservation area, supporting wildlife habitat, outdoor education, and responsible enjoyment of Tennessee's natural resources.

"This naming celebrates two icons who helped shape the way Tennesseans and visitors connect with the outdoors," said TWRA Executive Director Jason Maxedon. "Bill Dance Lake and the Herb Parsons Wildlife Refuge will stand as lasting tributes to their contributions and will provide world-class opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, and outdoor recreation."

The public is invited to visit and enjoy the newly named lake and refuge, which highlight TWRA's ongoing efforts to enhance access, improve habitat, and strengthen Tennessee's outdoor traditions. Additional planned projects for the site include the construction of a new concessions building with restroom facilities, a 34'x24' pavilion sponsored by Ford Motor Company, and upgrades to the onsite archery range.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is responsible for protecting, managing, and conserving fish and wildlife species for the benefit of Tennesseans and visitors. The Agency also maintains public safety through law enforcement and safety education on waterways.
