The Community Veterans Days Service, hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6791, is at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, at VFW post, 431 N. Neltnor Blvd. Kevin Driscoll is the moderator. Featured speaker is Mayor Ruben Pineda. Diane Denton, chaplain of the VFW Auxiliary, gives the opening and closing prayers. The 21-gun salute is by members of the American Legion Post 300 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6791. Playing "Taps" are trumpet players George Kotke and Dominik Mohai, seniors at West Chicago Community High School. Refreshments are served after the service.

Through various programs, West Chicago honors Veterans.

The different grades in West Chicago Elementary School District 33 have different activities planned.

In preschool classrooms, the children are encouraged to wear red, white and blue and write thank you cards to veterans. Kindergarten through fifth grade received a choice board of activities to utilize in classrooms. Among the options of the choice board were teachers reading recommended texts to students, videos with information about Veterans Day and the importance of those who serve in the armed forces. Online activities provide information about the five branches of the U.S. military, discussions on why people choose to join the military.

Sixth graders read and analyze a nonfiction article, "The History of Veterans' Day," plus write thank you notes to veterans. Seventh grade students work in conjunction with the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park in creating thank you cards to be sent to various service organizations. These include One Savvy Veteran, Honor Flight Chicago, American Legion Cantigny Post 556, and local college veteran associations. During the week of Veterans' Day, students in 8th-grade classrooms will be in the midst of their WWII Common Good unit. Highlighted in this unit are the contributions of veterans including the role and contributions of minorities and women in our military. Through a building activity students learn the meaning and start of Veterans Day.They also meet veterans on a virtual tour field trip, "Voices of U.S. Why We Serve."

Both Evergreen Elementary School and Benjamin Middle School have Veterans Day assemblies Monday, Nov. 11, 2023. The Middle School assembly, taking place at 9:15 a.m., honors members of the Benjamin community who are veterans as well as those who currently serve in the Armed Forces. The assembly incudes guests, special activities and patriotic music. Students in scouting wear their uniforms and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Evergreen assembly is at 2 p.m. Along with the assembly, the school collected donations to support Veterans Path to Hope. All donations of food and supplies go directly to veterans in need.

West Chicago Public Library has a Special Story time Program at Cantigny Park. Library staff share a story inspired by heroes. The special guest reader is a veteran. There are sing along patriotic songs.

The banners highlighting sixty-two West Chicago veterans banners now are on display in the downtown area, Main Street from Washington Street to Wilson Avenue, Galena Street from Main Street to High Street, and Turner Court from Washington Street to Main Street. Each side of a banner features a local Veteran's military, accompanied by their name, years of service, and military branch.

• West Chicago Community High School students enrolled in Child Development I classes, under the supervision of teacher Brittney Bauer, teach children from the age of 2.5 through five in a three-week Wildcat Preschool Program. The classes are Tuesday through Thursday, starting Nov. 19 and ending Dec. 12, 2024. Children need to be close to being potty trained. There are two sessions. • In the Class 8A playoff football game Friday, Nov. 2, 2024, in Normal, No. 27 West Chicago Community High School lost to No. 6 Normal Community High School with a score of 16-41. AsI watched the video of the Wildcat football team going to the bus with the drum cadence of the band playing, I thought what a unique experience for these young men-memories in the making. The community is proud of these young heroes. Also the band deserves special accolades as they perform at home football games, demonstrating school spirit.

• To support students who have recently arrived in the United States. West Chicago Community High School introduced the Newcomer Ambassadors Program, which was created by Newcomer Ambassador Program Coordinator Emily Brown. The program pairs newcomers with student leaders who were once newcomers themselves, offering guidance and support during their transition to the school. The inaugural group of Ambassadors include Kevin Antonio, Gabi Marin, Slava Stefurak, Emmy Santiago, Geo Muñoz, Alani Hernandez, Miguel Coraspe Ruiz, Sabra Kabir, Mafe Cespedes Hurtado, Jose Guerrero, Laura Orjuela Aponte, Juliana Manrique Torres and Daniel Rodriguez Duran. Ambassadors, selected based on teacher recommendations for their leadership skills and empathy, help new students navigate their first days, providing school tours, assisting with classes, and offering ongoing personal support.

Over the past two years, the number of newcomer students at West Chicago High School has risen dramatically. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school welcomed approximately 25 newcomer students, followed by 60 last year. They were exploring West Chicago Elementary School District 33 procedures for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for Attendance and Truancy procedures. • Community leaders, the former preschool principal, and retired preschool staff attended the Fall Open House at Pioneer Preschool in West Chicago Elementary School District 33. They saw all district preschoolers under one roof, toured the building, explored classrooms, voted for the best pumpkin based on book themes and ate a special penguin mascot cookie. • The Learning Resource Center at Norton Creek Elementary School has a new mural created and painted by Christina Benhart. Students were able to watch the creation from beginning to end. Benhart is an artist who works as a freelance graphic designer, muralist, illustrator, and fine arts painter with more than 20 years of experience. She works doing various jobs from designing logos to illustrating, and painting murals for both residential and commercial clients. She received her Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Media Arts & Animation from the Illinois Institute of Art and is currently working towards a Master of Arts in Counseling: Art Therapy. com

• The Conservation Foundation donated a white oak tree to commemorate Currier School and Sue Avila's 25 years of participation in the Mighty Acorns program. Avila also was awarded the first ever Golden Acorn Award for her dedication to the program.

Mighty Acorns is a stewardship based environmental education program involving students in stewardship projects in their own community. Currier School has supported ecological restoration efforts of the Dupage Forest Preserve's Blackwell Forest Preserve that borders the school's property.The oak tree the students planted is small, but will grow and live for hundreds of years, supporting a wide variety of animals. Through projects like tree planting, seed collecting, and the removal of invasive species, the students are helping to create healthy communities and are inspired to become the next generation of environmental stewards. merleburl.com

• West Chicago Community Clothing Closet, operated by St. Michael's United Church of Christ, is open from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, in the basement of the Rockwell Building, 108 Sherman St. There is no charge for the clothing and shoes. Each family may choose five articles of clothing per person in their family. The Closet is open the second Saturday of each month.

• Jake Cousins, a 2013 Wheaton Academy alumnus, is a pitcher and a critical part of the New York Yankees' The 30-year-old right-hander is the first WA alum to play in a World Series. Cousins played both basketball and baseball at Wheaton Academy. He went on to play baseball at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a four-year starter and was drafted by the Nationals in 2017. He has been in the minors and played for the Brewers, Astros, and White Sox before being traded to the Yankees this year. merleburl.com

CITY OF WEST CHICAGO

• At the Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, City Council meeting, West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission chairman, Heide Kuharich, announced the winner of the People's Choice Award winner in the City's 2024 Art Banner exhibit. The winner is Rosalie White from Batavia with her banner artwork of "Celebra la Vida" incorporating this year's theme,"Time to Celebrate/Tiempo para Celebrar." There were 68 entries from 46 entries, which included persons from 19 Illinois towns and four states. A total of 26 banners were on display. com

• Also at the meeting, City Council approved the installation of seven murals in the historic downtown district. The murals, digitally printed on vinyl banners will be enclosed in seven 8'x12' foot aluminum frames. West Chicago artist Giovanni "Gio" Arellano created artwork to celebrate and showcase the features of the Illinois Prairie Path. The murals are Illinois Prairie Path, Monarch Butterfly & Athanasia, Humming Bird & Bee Balm, Cardinal & Sunflower, Dragonfly & Coneflower, Invasive Species-(Feral Cat; Wild Parsnip), and Endangered Species (Rusty Patched Bumblebee and Leafy Prairie Clover).

The total cost for the project is $28,007.50, which includes $8,400.00 for the artist and $19,607.50 for the production and installation of the banners and frames.The City has received a $14,900 grant from the DuPage Foundation's JCS Arts, Health, and Education fund, designated for the initial implementation of a rotating mural program. To fulfill the grant requirements, the City has matched the funds, establishing a total budget of $29,800. After the installation of the frames, the estimated cost to replace the artwork for all seven locations is approximately $9,800, based on current cost estimates. • DuPage Health Coalition, a part of DuPage County Health Department, presents "Everyday Hero, " CPR and AED training, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, in Wayne Township Senior Center, 27W031 North Ave. The two-hour training includes basic life support, practice hands only CPR,use of a model AED, and Narcan/Overdose education. • The Trunk or Treat, hosted by the West Chicago Public Library, and the Downtown Trick or Treat, hosted by the City of West Chicago, found many children and their parents having a fun time Saturday, Oct. 25, 2024.
