Anima Youth, a key partner in Croydon's Town Centre Taskforce, has launched a new one-of-a-kind Safe Space on Wheels - a welcoming minibus offering support directly to young people in the community.
Anima Youth is dedicated to preventing violence against women and girls (VAWG). The new mobile space is a home from home, like their Safe Space base in South Croydon. This offers a comfortable, private and accessible environment for girls and young women seeking guidance, safety or support.
The Safe Space on Wheels is stationed on North End, outside Next, every Tuesday, 3pm-6pm, providing a consistent and visible presence in one of Croydon's busiest areas for young people. Visitors to the bus can get advice and support from the trusted Anima Youth team.
Boys and young men are also welcome in the Anima Youth safe spaces. The team encourage conversations about healthy relationships, respect and positive behaviour - an essential part of their preventative approach to tackling VAWG.
Croydon's Town Centre Taskforce is a priority for Executive Mayor Jason Perry, ensuring everyone can feel safe and supported in the borough. The Taskforce is a Council partnership with residents, statutory, voluntary, community and faith sector organisations tackling antisocial behaviour and preventing issues from recurring.
Anima Youth works to empower girls and young women to navigate challenges, build confidence and stay safe. Through education, outreach, mentoring and safe spaces, they promote healthy, respectful relationships.
Eloise Ofori, Chief Executive at Anima Youth, said: "Our Safe Space on Wheels allows us to meet young people where they are, on their terms. This minibus is warm, familiar, and designed entirely with their needs in mind.
"We're also committed to working with boys and young men, because preventing violence against women and girls means addressing the attitudes and pressures they face too. This is about building a safer Croydon for everyone."
"As part of our violence against women and girls delivery plan we committed to doing more to make our borough safer for all. The work of our Town Centre Taskforce is doing just that, tackling issues and preventing them from happening again.
"Anima Youth is providing essential support to young people. They are relatable and their safe spaces are places where they know they can talk with trusted adults when needed. The safe space on wheels will make their services even more accessible for more young people. I look forward to seeing the minibus around North End
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
