EU citizens affected by thalidomide

EU citizens affected by thalidomide

15.1.2025

Question for written answer E-000162/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Elisabetta Gualmini (S&D)

In its resolution of 15 December 2016 on support for thalidomide survivors (2016/3029 (RSP)), Parliament urged the Commission to 'create a framework protocol at European level under which all European citizens affected by thalidomide would receive similar amounts of compensation, regardless of which Member State they are from, and to draw up an EU programme for assistance and support (including both financial and welfare provisions) for thalidomide victims and their families.'

To date, German company Grünenthal has failed to offer compensation not only to the Italian and European victims of thalidomide, but also to their families, which are mentioned in the resolution.

In the light of the above:

  • 1.How will the Commission follow up on European Parliament resolution (2016/3029 (RSP))?
  • 2.Will it make representations to the German Government in order to ensure that justice is served?
