Today the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) notified the judgment in the case of Ernestina Ascencio Rosario, an indigenous woman from the Zongolica mountains of Veracruz, for events that occurred in 2007.
During the hearing, the Government of Mexico accepted responsibility for the violation of Ms. Ascencio's human rights to life and health, stemming from the absence of timely access to adequate medical care.
The government also accepted responsibility for violations of the rights to judicial guarantees and judicial protection of both the victim and her family members, as well as the right to personal integrity of her family members.
The Mexican state always stands in solidarity with victims to establish the truth, guarantee justice and reparations, and ensure non-recurrence. The government will carefully analyze the reasoning and evidence contained in the judgment and act accordingly, maintaining a gender perspective and intersectional approach.
The Mexican state reaffirms its commitment to combating violence toward women and to protecting the rights of indigenous peoples.
