The Senate Republicans' reconciliation bill is still in peril after previously being derailed amid Republican opposition to the Trump administration's $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization" fund. President Trump and top administration officials have made clear they don't want the proposed fund changed or restricted. Republican leadership has asked the White House to develop language to impose guardrails on the fund. In a June 1 statement, the Justice department vowed to honor a federal judge's approval of a temporary restraining order of the fund until June 12. However, the statement did not mention how the administration would handle the fund beyond that deadline.
There are three primary ways to address Republicans' concerns about the fund: either rely on the White House to set guardrails or eliminate the fund altogether, or resolve those concerns directly within the legislation. GOP leaders have an ambitious timeline this week as they plan to kick off the vote-a-rama Wednesday evening and pass the immigration reconciliation bill Thursday morning.
Depending on how Republicans choose to address the issue, Senate Democrats are considering numerous amendments, including one to block the creation of the fund outright.
