City of Southfield Breaks Ground on New $26 Million Aquatic Center

The City of Southfield officially broke ground on its new Aquatic Center on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, marking a major investment in recreation, wellness and family fun for the community.

Residents of all ages joined City leaders and project partners outside the Southfield Sports Arena, 26000 Evergreen Road, for the celebration, a clear sign of how much this project means to the Southfield community.

The new Aquatic Center replaces the former Sports Arena pool, which closed due to aging infrastructure, giving residents a modern facility right here at home.

The approximately $26 million project includes a new 28,000 square foot addition and renovations to approximately 10,000 square feet of existing facility space. The expanded facility will offer new ways for families to play, individuals to stay active and neighbors to connect.

The new Aquatic Center will feature:

A 75 Foot Lap Pool: Four lanes with starting blocks for swimming and aquatic programming.

A 4,900 Square Foot Leisure Pool: Featuring zero depth entry and interactive water features.

A Lazy River: Complete with spray features and a conversation cove.

An Indoor/Outdoor Water Slide: An exciting ride that travels outside the building before returning indoors.

A Therapeutic Pool: Designed for water aerobics, aquatic fitness and low impact exercise, with built in benches, jets and in water seating.

More Than Just Swimming

The project will also bring new locker rooms, improved entrances and common areas, a new event space for community gatherings, a wet classroom for aquatic instruction, a renovated lounge corridor and an updated multipurpose room.

With zero depth entry, a therapeutic pool and a wet classroom for swim lessons, the new Aquatic Center is designed so everyone, from toddlers to seniors, can enjoy the water.

Details on hours, memberships and programming will be shared as the opening approaches. Residents can follow the City of Southfield's website and social media channels for construction updates as the project moves forward.
