MIDDLESBORO, Ky. - From October 16 to 18, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park will celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the Cumberland Gap Tunnel by offering visitors a rare, behind-the-scenes experience.
Visitors will have the opportunity to see inside the tunnel, discover how the historic Gap route transformed from trail to highway to tunnel and learn how the twin bore tunnel was constructed.
"The Cumberland Gap Tunnel was considered a marvel of engineering when it opened on October 18, 1996," said Superintendent Lisa Baldwin. "We are proud to partner with the Cumberland Gap Tunnel Authority to recognize the anniversary of this important park feature and history."
Event programs will include guided tours of the Cumberland Gap Tunnel, guided walks to the historic Cumberland Gap and an evening program at the Wilderness Road Campground. All programs are free.
