WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth (MD-03)issued the following statement after President Trump's Joint Session Address.
"After over a year of the President side-stepping and thwarting the will of Congress, I believe it was important for me to be present at the State of the Union and re-assert Congress's role as a co-equal branch of government. Simply put, there are parts of any job you may not enjoy, but attending the President's address to Congress was part of my job.
"There was no doubt that his speech was a windy address filled with culture wars, division, fear-mongering, and misinformation. He attacked our immigrant neighbors, denigrated our hard-working civil servants, and made fun of many of the things that I believe make our country great. There were a handful of President Trump's promises that I could find a sliver of common ground: supporting our servicemembers and banning members of Congress from trading stocks - although he conveniently left himself out. But promises without real solutions are just that: promises.
"What I didn't hear was any real solution to the affordability crisis too many Americans are experiencing. The numbers - and the reality on the ground - don't lie. We are seeing higher prices at the grocery store, at the doctor's office, and on our energy bills. The President's erratic and reckless tariffs have cost families hundreds of dollars over the last year. That is the real State of the Union."
