SALMON- The Idaho Transportation Department is beginning project development and preliminary design work for the 100-year-old bridge over the Salmon River on U.S. Highway 93 in Salmon.
As this work begins, a community working group will meet on Wednesday, March 25, to share feedback and help identify a range of replacement options ahead of a public meeting later this fall.
The group will help ensure that community interests and concerns are represented throughout project development. The meeting will outline preliminary constraints and early design concepts for an updated Salmon River Bridge. ITD will use the group's feedback and input to continue project development and prepare alternatives.
The project will ultimately bring the bridge crossing to modern standards and ensure it can better serve multiple modes of transportation for the Salmon community. The bridge was originally constructed in 1926 and is the only developed river crossing within 80 miles.
"We want to do everything we can to make this project a success, and that starts with finding out what's important to the community," Project Manager Eli Robinson said. "What we hear from this working group will be hugely beneficial to project development and design."
ITD will host multiple public meetings prior to construction of the new bridge which is currently scheduled for 2031.
