Detroit juvenile arraigned as an adult on charges including second degree murder

Mount Clemens, MI - Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced today that Daniel Shane Canales, a 16-year-old juvenile of Detroit, was arraigned as an adult on Second Degree Murder and four other charges in connection with a fatal vehicle crash that allegedly occurred while fleeing from police on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

After carefully examining all the available evidence including the severity of the allegations, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido decided to charge Canales as an adult.

An arraignment was held on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at the 41B District Court in Clinton Township, MI before Magistrate Ryan Zemke. Canales was charged with the following:

Count 1: Homicide - Murder - Second Degree, any term to life felony

Count 2: Police Officer - Fleeing - First Degree - Vehicle Code, a 15-year felony

Count 3: Operating - License Suspended, Revoked, Denied - Causing Death, a 15-year felony

Count 4: Police Officer - Fleeing - Third Degree, Vehicle Code, a five-year felony

Count 5: Motor Vehicle - Unlawful Driving Away, a five-year felony

Magistrate Zemke denied bond. Canales will continue to be detained at the Juvenile Justice Center in Mt. Clemens, MI.

A Probable Cause Conference for Canales is set for Monday, July 28, 2025 at 8:30 am before Judge Jacob Femminineo, Jr. at the 41B District Court in Clinton Township, MI.

It is alleged that during the early morning hours of Saturday, July 12, 2025, Canales was driving a stolen car. Law enforcement activated lights and sirens to pull the vehicle over. Canales fled at a high rate of speed, eventually hitting another vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle, 28-year-old Alex Habib of Madison Heights, died from his injuries.

"This remains a deeply troubling case," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido reiterated following the arraignment. "While Canales is a minor, the charges allege that his decision to flee from police resulted in the death of an innocent man. There must be consequences."

Prosecutor Lucido continued, "Charging a juvenile as an adult is never routine, but given the severity of this case, it was necessary. Accountability matters, regardless of age. Our responsibility is to seek justice, and that means proceeding with the full weight of the law."

Prosecutor Lucido is actively calling on Michigan lawmakers to come together in support of strong, bipartisan legislation to address the growing public safety threat of drivers who refuse to stop for law enforcement.

The Michigan House is now taking up a bill that would impose tougher penalties on those who refuse to stop for police.

"Every time someone runs, they roll the dice with innocent lives. I want to end that gamble," Prosecutor Lucido said. "We need statutory enhancement of consequences including mandatory prison time. The people of the state of Michigan deserve to be protected."
