Minister Tajani on mission to Brazil for the “Belém Climate Summit”, on the eve of COP30

Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani will represent Italy on behalf of the Government at the Belém Climate Summit tomorrow, convened by Brazilian President Ignacio Lula, just days ahead of the inauguration of COP30.

At the Summit, Italy will reaffirm its firm commitment to doing its part to limit global temperature rise, urging all participating States to combine ambition with realism, pursue climate objectives with openness and innovation, and avoid dogmatism. Italy also contributed to the important outcome achieved today by the European Union Environment Ministers, who, ahead of COP30, confirmed the climate target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 66-72% by 2035 compared with 1990 levels.

This year, COP30 in Belém commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and, eighty years after the founding of the United Nations, represents the main international forum for addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The Summit will be presided over by Brazil, which has symbolically chosen to host the event in the capital of the State of Pará, known as the "Gateway to the Amazon".

During his visit to Belém, Minister Tajani will tour the Italian Pavilion featuring the innovative floating platform "AquaPraça by BF International", designed by Carlo Ratti Associati and previously presented at the Venice Biennale last September, which has been included among the official COP30 exhibition spaces. On the platform, Minister Tajani will meet a group of Italian entrepreneurs operating in Brazil, a country included in the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Export Action Plan.

During his mission in Belém, the Minister will also visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Nazaré, designed in the early 20th century by the Italian architect Gino Coppedè. He will further visit the therapeutic community "Fazenda da Esperança" and the Divina Providenza Hospital in Marituba, on the city's outer edge, where Italian missionaries of the Congregation of the Poor Servants of Divine Providence - Don Calabria Institute - are active.
