Retail Sales Grow in June

by Raymond J. Keating -

According to the latest report from the U.S. Census Bureau, retail and food services sales grew by 0.6 percent (on a seasonally adjusted basis in nominal dollars) in June.

Even after inflation is considered (CPI inflation for June registered 0.3 percent), that's a real gain. And much-needed given that retail and food services sales had declined in nominal terms in both April and May.

In fact, the June level of sales ($720.1 billion) came in below the March level ($722.6 billion)

The consumer, of course, matters a great deal to small businesses and the economy in general. But as I've noted before, the consumer mainly is a follower, that is, consumers take their cues from what businesses are doing in terms of investing, expanding and hiring, and from policymakers in terms of creating additional costs, risks and uncertainties, or reducing such burdens.
