Free Marine Flare Collection Event for Ventura County Boaters

Simi Valley residents with expired marine flares can take advantage of a free collection event on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Channel Islands Harbor Marina, 3850 Harbor Boulevard, Oxnard.

Marine flares are required safety equipment for boaters but typically expire after approximately 42 months. Expired flares contain hazardous chemicals and can be difficult and costly to dispose of safely. Proper disposal helps protect public health, local waterways, and the environment.

The event is open exclusively to recreational boaters who live in Ventura County or berth their boats in the county. Proof of residence or boat slip fee is required. Commercial flares and other hazardous waste will not be accepted.

The collection event is part of a statewide effort involving the California Product Stewardship Council, California State Parks, and the California Coastal Commission's Boating Clean and Green Program. Boaters can also learn about reusable electronic alternatives to traditional pyrotechnic flares.
