WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai'i) announced the Honolulu Department of Transportation Services will receive more than $11.5 million from the Federal Transit Administration to purchase replacement buses and other equipment. The new funding will allow for an aging fleet to be replenished with newer, modern buses which will improve reliability for passengers.
"As more people on O'ahu ride transit, this funding will strengthen the bus system and help people get to where they need to go, safely and more reliably," said Senator Schatz, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
"Honolulu has long taken pride in our award-winning TheBus system, and this investment helps us build on that legacy," said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. "Modernizing our fleet means providing riders with a smoother, more reliable commute while strengthening the role public transit plays in keeping our island moving. By replacing older buses with new, state-of-the-art vehicles, we're ensuring our residents continue to receive the high-quality service they expect and deserve. A big mahalo to Senator Brian Schatz and his office for championing this important funding and supporting Honolulu's efforts to keep improving transit for our community."
